What We Assess
The applicable requirements depend on factors including when the pool or spa was constructed and the barrier standard nominated by the relevant council.
- Gates opening in the correct direction
- Self-closing and self-latching operation
- Latch positioning
- Gaps beneath and between barrier components
- Barrier height
- Climbable objects and surfaces
- Windows and doors opening into the pool area
- Boundary barriers
- The condition and stability of the barrier
- Other access points into the pool or spa area
The MPF team will explain any issues identified and the areas that may require rectification.
Built on Experience. Focused on Safety.
Experience Behind Every Inspection
Michael Silverstein is a registered builder and pool barrier inspector with more than 40 years of experience in the building and property industry.
He is also a father of three and previously owned and operated a swim school for more than seven years.
That experience means pool safety is not treated as a paperwork exercise.
Michael and the broader MPF team understand both the technical requirements and the real reason those requirements exist.
Pool Safety Is More Than a Council Requirement
A pool barrier can appear secure while still containing gaps, climbable areas, gate problems or other issues that prevent it from meeting the applicable standard.
These details matter because barriers are intended to restrict unsupervised access to pools and spas, particularly by young children.
The MPF team conducts professional barrier inspections and helps property owners understand the issues that may need to be addressed before a barrier can be certified as compliant.
SIMPLE PROCESS
How the Process Works
01
Send Us Your Information
Provide the council letter or documentation identifying the applicable barrier standard and compliance due date.
02
Book the Inspection
The MPF team arranges a suitable time to inspect the pool or spa barrier.
03
Receive the Findings
If issues are identified, we explain what requires attention before the barrier can be certified.
04
Rectify Any
Issues
You arrange the required repairs or adjustments.
05
Reinspection and Certification
Once the barrier is compliant, the appropriate certificate can be issued for lodgement with your local council.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS?
Pool Inspection Questions
What is a pool barrier inspection?
A pool barrier inspection checks your pool or spa’s safety barrier, fences, gates, latches, and surrounding structures, against the Australian Standard that applies to your property. MPF Inspections Group carries out pool barrier inspections across Melbourne in line with Victorian regulations.
Do I need to register my pool before booking an inspection?
Yes. Every pool and spa capable of holding more than 30cm of water must be registered with your local Melbourne council before an inspection can take place. Registration determines your property’s construction date and which barrier standard applies.
What documentation do I need to provide before the inspection?
We’ll need the letter from council that indicates the construction date of the pool and the applicable standard under which it needs to be inspected.
What happens during the inspection?
One of our qualified inspectors visits your property to examine your barrier’s height, gates, latches, non-climbable zones, and any nearby structures that could provide unintended access, assessed against the relevant Australian Standard for Victorian properties.
What happens if my barrier isn't compliant?
If issues are identified, we’ll explain exactly what needs attention before the barrier can be certified. You arrange the required repairs or adjustments, and once complete, we return to carry out a re-inspection.
How long do I have to fix a non-compliant barrier?
In most cases, Victorian regulations allow up to 60 days to bring your barrier into compliance. If the barrier poses a significant and immediate safety risk, or can’t realistically be made compliant in that time, a certificate of non-compliance may be issued immediately.
How long is a certificate of barrier compliance valid?
A certificate of compliance must be lodged with your council within 30 days of being issued. Compliance is generally reviewed again every four years, when a new certificate is required.
Do Not Leave Pool Safety Until the Compliance Deadline
Arrange your pool or spa barrier inspection and understand exactly what may be required.
